Grading

Children demonstrating forward roll during grading

When and Where?

Grading is conducted twice a year, in January and July. The date and venue will be announced closer to the grading date.

Eligibility

Only students who meet the requisite training duration and have achieved the required skill level are invited for grading.

Duration

Depending on the number of candidates, grading is usually divided into an 1-hour session for children, and a 1-to-2 hour session for youths and adults. Children may leave at the end of their session. They are, however, encouraged to stay in the dojo to observe the youths and adult grading.

Parents are welcome to observe grading.

Format

Candidates are evaluated on their competence by a panel of examiners. During grading, candidates are asked to demonstrate a variety of techniques expected of the belt level that they are grading for. They must show that they can defend themselves using these techniques to pass  grading.

Grading Results

Grading results are usually announced 2 to 4 weeks after grading.

Preparation

Other than attending class regularly to learn and practice the required techniques, candidates should:

  • Arrive at the grading venue 15 minutes early to use the bathroom, change, and get themselves mentally ready
  • Ensure that their finger and toe nails short
  • Check that their uniforms are clean and belts tightly tied

Disclaimer

The information here is a general guide and may be changed without notice.

Just as the real-life practice of Aikido is dynamic, we may change the grading duration and format in response to the situation at that time.
